Internal Communications Analysis and Strategy
The American Society Of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) helps the global engineering community develop solutions to real-world challenges. The CEO realized that internal information flows needed upgrades to foster more engaged employees who are aware of activities – up, down, and sideways within the organization.
Problem:
Analysis:
Carefully designed primary research uncovered how and where ASME employees find and receive information, current barriers to information flow, and potential ideas for process improvements.
Create and integrate a communications strategy that touches every workstream.
Centralize ownership of communication strategy.
Establish a single source of truth.
Build a culture that supports integrated communication strategy and tactics.
Recommended Solutions:
The internal communications team developed an integrated communications plan based on the recommendations. The result is a structured process incorporating information from each business unit and highlighting the enterprise goals. Each business unit begins by presenting information during the biweekly CEO/staff Coffee Chat. Appropriate content is then sent via a centralized internal communications team to reinforce the information and posted on a modern intranet, creating a “single source of truth.”
This modern intranet also includes org charts, shared calendars, staff directories, and more. This approach has not only boosted engagement but also significantly increased intranet traffic.
Finally, we conducted a follow-up pulse survey in which 193 staff members participated, and the results were quite impressive. An astounding 96% of the group expressed that the information conveyed through various communication channels had significantly contributed to increasing their knowledge and understanding of ASME. This is an indicator that we are excelling in internal communication efforts.
